Summer in Fiesole
Rich of events and surprises, the 57th Estate Fiesolana continues until September in the spellbinding setting of the ancient Roman Theater of Fiesole with music, theater, poetry, dance and cinema events. For the classical music section, OGI (Italian Youth Orchestra) is holding a concert on July 5th. On July 12th Daniel Oren will conduct the Orchestra and Choir of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a concert featuring music by Verdi and Bernstein, while July 19th will see a not eworthy performance of Beethoven's Symphony no. 9. English-born French diva Jane Birkin will be in Fiesole on July 23rd for her only Italian 'Arabesque' concert. An icon of the sixties - you may remember her as The Blonde in Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece movie 'Blow Up' - but as radiant now as she ever was, Jane reinvents within a North African musical setting the songs that Serge Gainsbourg created for her and which she has always interpreted with grace and emotion. The 'Maestri del Cinema' award will go to English director Ken Loach (gala night on July 13th; a selection of his films will follow between August 5th and September 3rd). Finally the 15th Florence Dance Festival will take up the stage of the Roman Theater in July from 4th to August 2nd with a combination of traditional and experimental dance companies coming from countries as wide-ranging as Cuba and Korea, Spain and Russia.
