France Cinema 2003The best of French movies past and present

18th France Cinema
[Giorgio Mariani]

Among the films selected for this edition of France Cinema we would like to cite the brilliant political satire "Bon Voyage" by Rappeneau, which chronicles events in 1940, when the French Government fled to Brodeaux after the German invasion. The inventive "Stupeur et tremblement" by Corneau is a film about the working conditions in Japanese offices. An important presence is that of the "Les invasions barbares" by Denys Arcand that was very well received at the last Cannes Film Festival. This edition’s retrospective is dedicated to the rediscovery of crime movies the French "polar" films as compared to their American cousins. Both started in America but in France the popularity of these films has created a new genre of its own that has produced works of great importance: in Florence twenty titles will be presented including "La poison" by Guitry, "Le jour se leve" by Carné, "Pepe le Moko" by Duvivier, "Buffet foid" by Blier and “Le boucher” by Chabrol.
