Expanding on Tradition
[Anna Magazzů]

Installation by CytrymbaumFrom Saturday December 6th to Sunday the 14th the historic Medici fortress Fortezza da Basso will host the 4th Florence International Biennale of Contemporary Art.

This year 800 artists from 74 different countries have been selected without regulations regarding style, school or trend by a Scientific Committee of 50 international experts under the artistic direction of John T. Spike, art critic and historian, who states that "with the Florentine Biennale worldwide artistic expression is promoted through Contemporary Art". At the 2001 edition, H.R.H. the Prince of Wales chose to display some of his works honoring the artists participating in the Biennale.

The Florentine Biennale aims to integrate all forms of culture, and this year it has gained the official approval of the United Nations. It will participate in their "Dialogue among Civilizations" program, and artists from all over the world will be meeting in Florence during the Biennale to exhibit their most recent work, compare experiences and techniques.

On Saturday 13th Dec at 3pm an International jury will award prizes for the following categories: painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, mixed media, digital art and installation. In addition, there will be an exciting program of performances and conferences, concerts and special events which will run parallel to the exhibit, Frederick J. Eversely will also display a sculpture in Piazza della Repubblica.

The 2003 Biennale also presents the prestigious Premio Lorenzo il Magnifico award to the Conservation Department of the Vatican Museum - in recognition of their precious work in the field of art conservation - and to the legendary Formula One company Ferrari, a symbol of Italian creativity and technical genius.

Admission to the Biennale costs € 10,00 (full price) or € 8,00 (students with proof of identity).

The opening hours are 10.30am to 7.30pm. Guided visits are available on request. Please check the official website for further info in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German.
