Buying or renting a cellphone and a tessera ricaricabile (pre-paid card) to go with it is an easy and affordable way to keep in touch with your friends and school in Florence, and the shop will often agree to buy back the phone at the end of your stay. Every time you make a call, money will be deducted off your pre-paid credit until it is used up. You can then buy a ricarica for your card from almost everywhere - from bars to newsagents and tobacconists or supermarkets. The three main cellphone companies in Italy are Omnitel, TIM and Wind. Prices and offers change quickly, so shop around and find the best deal for your needs.
