Pillsmedical information

Better safe than sorry
[Dolores Maria Jimenez]

You should always inform the staff of your school and your housemates if you have a medical condition they had better be aware of, including allergies to medicines and food.

Italian doctors are well qualified and will be able to provide aid even if a translator is not available. But the following speak English:

- Dr. Stephen Kerr is an English general practitioner who lives in Florence. You can find him in Piazza Mercato Nuovo 1, by the leather market between Piazza Repubblica and the Ponte Vecchio and his telephone contacts are 055.288055 (office) or 335.8361682 (mobile phone)

- Dr. Mariarosaria di Tommaso is a gynecologist based in Viale Gramsci 73, tel. 055 2347938.

At the Tourist Medical Service in Via Lorenzo il Magnifico 59 a doctor is on call 24 hours a day (tel. 055.475411).

The Santa Maria Nuova hospital is located in the city center in Piazza Santa Maria Nuova 1 (tel. 055.27581), while the major hospital in Florence is the Careggi complex in Viale Morgagni 85 (tel. 055.4277111). In an emergency, head for the Pronto Soccorso (Emergency Room). There is also an ambulance and first aid point in Piazza Duomo to the right of the Cathedral façade.

If you need to call an ambulance or in case of an accident you should dial the medical emergency number 118, which answers calls in Italian and English and the call is always free including from cellphones and public phone booths. 118 will alert the emergency unit closest to where you are. In fact in an emergency you will always be treated in public Italian hospitals, regardless of your health insurance.

Finally, when looking for a pharmacy watch out for a neon green cross sign. Chemists in Italy have an excellent medical training and are usually qualified to provide advice on minor ailments.

Some pharmacies in the center:
- de' Serragli - Via de' Serragli 94r
- Codeca - Via de’ Ginori 50r
- Santa Trinita - Piazza Frescobaldi 13r
- Santa Caterina - Viale Lavagnini 1r

Some pharmacies are on duty 24-hours a day. Occasionally you may be charged a little “diritto di chiamata” (night call tax) for late-night purchases. Late night chemists are:
- Molteni - Via Calzaiuoli 7/r
- All’Insegna del Moro - P.zza S.Giovanni20r
- Comunale - inside the train station
