Palazzo Davanzati - Sala dei PappagalliExploring Museo Davanzati

A Home Away from Home
[Alison Geist]

Situated in Palazzo Davanzati, Museo Davanzati blends in to the grey walls of Via Porta Rossa – that is, until you look up. Upon turning your head toward the sky, this dominating traditional Florentine home, with an intricate creation of the Davanzati coat of arms on the outer wall, towers silently over the street. When you walk inside, the history and beautiful architecture quiet all visitors in awe. Throughout the centuries, this house has had a variety of families and inhabitants, including the Davizzi, Bartolini, and Davanzati families, as well as a number of antiquarians who utilized the house as a showcase for purchasing and selling artifacts. But in 1956, the Italian State purchased the home and have thus created a museum of not only the artifacts within but of primarily the Florentine life that exists within the walls of this home.
On the ground floor, history is depicted through words and pictures about the history of the house and families, and a number of paintings are displayed in a side room on this entrance floor. Once upstairs, the amazing architecture and antiques combine to create an atmosphere of opposition: regality and simplicity. Though it is clearly apparent through the ornateness of the furniture as well as the largeness of the rooms the wealth of the previous homeowners, the simplicity of the stone and shapes of the rooms give an air of normal life. While being guided through the second and third floors of living and study quarters of the home, a trademark aspect of the houses design are the fireplaces. With their conelike structure and depth of these contraptions, they were quite a modern aspect upon construction in the 1300s. Another grand aspect of this home is the openness of the top part and the courtyard dropping five stories down to the ground floor level. This openness creates a bright airiness to this stone structure.
To encounter this historical landmark of Florence, simply drop in. Entrance is free and you may enjoy the loggia, ground floor, and first floor alone. But if you wish to venture upstairs to the second and third floors, make certain you are there at either 10:00, 11:00, or 12:00 to join a tour. Go ahead, visit the Museo Davanzati and make yourself at home in one of Florence’s traditional houses.
