The art works of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure on display at Palazzo Medici
Riccardi. “Gold, Silver and Jewels” proposes 15 masterpieces of 12th to
17th century goldsmithery from several different cities in Italy. The incredible
Crown of the Madonna of the Visitation from Enna, the work of
Leonardo Montalban; a priceless “Holy Cross”, a 13th century masterpiece
from the Town Art Gallery of Castiglion Fiorentino; a silver Chalice
by Cosimo Merlini; the Crutch of St. Giovanni Gualberto from the Abbey
of Vallombrosa; two silver Angels from the Reliquary of St. Jerome by
Antonio di Salvi; three panels from the Silver Altar in the Baptistery of
Florence, including the Birth of John the Baptist by Antonio del Pollaiolo
and the Decapitation of John the Baptist by Andrea del Verrocchio; a 14th
century reliquary of French manufacture, known as the Libretto, in gold,
enamels, pearls and rubies, with miniatures on parchment; some Sicilian
masterpieces that include the
priceless pendant of the Pelican
feeding its young and the
so-called Golden Sphere, the
work of Leonardo Montalbano,
and, in the opinion of the
Opificio, the most spectacular
restoration and result. Tickets
