Outside of Florence
Tuscan delights

It’s common knowledge that Florence is the capital of Tuscany, making it the epicenter of a region made famous by its wine and terracotta roofed villas. This region is also home to many other lesser known cities, the likes of which have been featured in movies and dreamt about by anyone looking to relax. Most of these towns are easily accessible from Florence by bus or train and are a great way to leave the big city behind and experience the charms that make this region famous.
The first town,
Lucca, is surrounded by ancient ramparts, which protected the town hundreds of years ago but now serve a more enjoyable purpose, offering visitors a beautiful path to see the town on. Single or tandem
bikes can be rented for little money and offer visitors a fun way to access the town’s Roman amphitheater, many churches and, if you’re lucky, one of the antique markets held fairly regularly in
Lucca.
Siena, once Florence’s rival, is another nearby town that now beckons residents away from the commercialism and traffic of Florence. Known for its famous Piazza Il Campo and cathedral, Siena is a pleasant change that doesn’t disappoint. Numerous shops sell leather goods and panforte, a twist on fruitcake reminiscent of
Christmas.
Pisa remains a more recognizable town due to the presence of its famous leaning tower that seems to defy gravity. Pisa lacks the charming feel that some of the other towns possess but is worth visiting for a couple of hours to check out the tower and cathedral.
For a true retreat from the commotion of the city visit the small village of Cortona. Used as the setting for the well known movie Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona is perched in the mountains and boasts amazing views. You might not find as many stores or restaurants here, but this only serves to compliment the quiet and relaxing environment.
Last but not least, have you ever found yourself wondering what is on the hills surrounding
Florence or how to get to them? The answer is simple,
Fiesole. Fiesole is a small town about fifteen minutes outside of Florence by bus. It offers great views of the city and a chance to laugh at all the people stuck in the valley suffering the summer heat. There are also many restaurants and Etruscan ruins that make this an excellent day trip and escape from the city.
