San Lorenzo mercatoit's all in the kit

Surviving San Lorenzo Market
[Nicole Duncan]

San Lorenzo mercatoMount Everest, the Sahara Desert, Yosemite National Park and even south Detroit are all places that require some sort of survival kit to make it through. This May, the San Lorenzo Market Centrale will get added to that list.
A trio of products created by three different departments at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute in Florence will be on display in the Market as a “survival kit” for a week in May.
The creators of the kit decided to refer to their products as a survival kit to poke fun at the stereotypes about the Market.
“One of the concepts behind the survival kit was to play around the fact that San Lorenzo is considered an unsafe place in Florence,” said Paolo Ghielmetti, a graphic design professor at the LdM.
The survival kit will include: a special shopping cart constructed by the interior design department; a wearable tent created by the fashion design department; and a few custom designed pieces made by the jewelry design department.
The featured item of the survival kit is the cart, which was specifically designed to assist the elderly in their regular shopping trips to the Market.
When it was first built, the Market Centrale was an innovative building – one of the first markets to feature a roof. Now in a world filled with easily accessible supermarkets, the Market seems rooted in an obsolete system of shopping.
The consistently bustling atmosphere and two floors stocked full of produce, meats, pastas and spices can make grocery shopping a strenuous activity.
Not only will the cart allow shoppers to tote their purchases around the market, it will serve as a seat should they wish to take a break from the commotion. It is also designed to scale the stairs with its owner. While the cart and the other items in the survival kit are prototypes that will not be sale, the success of the kit could lead to the local government adopting the models and eventually mass producing them. Regardless of the outcome, Ghielmetti emphasized that the true importance of the survival kit was the fact that foreign college students were contributing to the community. Think you can survive the Market Centrale? Want to see a diversified assortment of student art? Don’t miss either of these events.
The Survival Kit will be on display for three days in the San Lorenzo Market Centrale from May 10 to 12. The Arts in the Street exhibition will also be held May 12 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony at Via del Giglio 4 at 5:30 p.m.

arts in the street

LdM is also hosting an Arts in the Street exhibition to further its community ties. Students will have the opportunity to share their art – paintings, jewelry, sculptures and photographs – with the local Florentines. The various works of art will be displayed on Via Faenza, Via San Antonio, Via Ariento, Canto de’ Nelli, Borgo la Noce, Piazza San Lorenzo and in Feltrinelli Bookshop on Via de’Cerretani. A commission consisting of professional artists and local personalities will judge the pieces and ultimately award three students.
