Creative minds at the Scuola Lorenzo de Medici are busily working, sewing machines are eagerly stitching, and coordinators are diligently planning the coming of the semester’s big charity fashion show to be held in May at
Fortezza da Basso. This will be LDM’s second fashion show and creators and coordinators are all anticipating a much grander turnout and an even more successful event than last year.
The clothes the students are using to recreate the innovative masterpieces were donated by
Mani Tese, a non-governmental social organization, which works to further justice, solidarity and respect among people. It raises public awareness on the causes of poverty and lobbies policy makers and institutions.
All proceeds collected from the fashion show, through
Banca Etica, will be donated to children in need in
Guatemala. Banca Etica is a bank which manages savings raised by people and invests them in initiatives pursuing both social and economic objectives. It’s inspired by the values of a sustainable social and human development.
The fashion show will have about 40 designers, each making about 2 outfits. Sabina Sonnig, one of the fashion students from Sweden, explained to me that this year the designers got to pick out their own scraps of clothing to work with. Last time the pieces were chosen for them so their freedom of expression was more limited. There are two sides to the coin, she says, because with the limitations you’re pushed to be more creative, but being able to choose your own pieces of clothing allows your full artistic talent to shine. “This is fun. I like wearing clothes, I like buying clothes, and I like making clothes,” said Sabina.
The
LDM film production class was filming the designers at work and plans to make a short film about the process. Julia Steinle, the coordinator of the fashion show, said they plan on playing this
video in the background with music at the fashion show so that viewers can see the before and after affect. The video will show everyone just how creatively the minds of the designers transformed the clothes. This year they also plan to show more videos and clips of Guatemala in an effort to make the cause more real for the audience. The main premise of the fashion show is charity and more focus will be placed on this cause than last year.
Everyone is hoping for an even better turnout and an even more spectacular event this time around. Bring your friends, bring your parents, bring your next door neighbor because everyone can find something to enjoy at this grand event.
