Corsini buildingFlorence is not just the city of art, fashion and crafts: for centuries it has also been one of the world's hubs of antique trading, and in fact some of its great antiquarians of the past have bequeathed their private collections to the city. Today, most of the city's antique dealers are located on the left side of the Arno, in Via Maggio and neighborhood.

Since 1959, once every two years Florence also host a major biennial antiquarian trade fair. The 23rd Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato is held in the magnificent setting of Palazzo Corsini in via del Parione between September 26th and October 5th. Palazzo Corsini is one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Europe, and its decor will be enhanced by the skill of Pier Luigi Pizzi, a famous theatrical set designer.

The list of exhibitors boasts eighty among the most important antique dealers of the world - from all over Italy as well as from London, Madrid, Paris, Monaco, and New York - who will display an astonishing range of art objects. The exceptional value of the pieces on display is confirmed by the fact that a panel of experts appointed by the government will examine each of them and individually grant or deny permission for export to other countries.

Even if the wares are all probably way beyond any ordinary visitor's pockets, the Biennale is certainly worth a visit, even just to relish the refined surroundings and to peer into this private palace.
The side events are just as interesting and include an exhibition about the extraordinary white porcelain statues produced by the Manifattura di Doccia (founded by Carlo Ginori in 1737), which to this date is one of the most important porcelain manufacturers in Italy.

Last but not least, it is nice to know that part of the ticket earnings of the opening night will fund the restoration of the statues adorning the Palazzo Pitti staircase.
