Safe Water
[
Alyssa Carroll]

The City of Florence relies on both groundwater and surface water sources for its water supply. Groundwater is obtained from deep wells drilled into the Middendorf and Black Creek aquifers.
Approximately 55 percent of Florence’s water is provided by the groundwater well system. The City of Florence also operates the Pee Dee River Regional Surface Water Plant. This plant, which utilizes the Pee Dee River as its source, also provides approximately 45 percent of Florence’s water supply.
Tap water in Florence is safe to drink unless marked “non-potabile”. However, most Italians prefer the taste of bottled mineral water (naturale or gas). A small bottle of water in grocery stores costs approximately 50 cents. It is often refrigerated.
Restaurants charge two to three times this amount. A grocery or wine store will often sell six-packs of larger bottles of water for 3 euro. This makes it relatively cheap. If you plan on a long outing, it is a good idea to take a bottle of water with you. Public fountains are practically non-existent.
