this is not america(But it Smells, Tastes & Feels Like It)

This is not America...
[Tanisha Palvia]

cuocoAs I stepped out of the Florence Airport in August, it finally hit me. I was no longer in North Carolina; I was in Italia. I had known I was studying abroad in the fall semester of 2006 eight months prior to my arrival, yet it only hit me when I arrived at night in a country where I knew no one and did not speak the native language. I think I was terrified. However, the moment of panic passed as I realized how lucky I was to be in such a beautiful city; so I took a taxi to my apartment, met my wonderful roommates, and began my amazing time abroad in Florence.
As the weeks went by, the city only got better and better. I usually got out of class by noon, and I spent the rest of the day walking through the cobble-stoned streets of Florence, admiring Michelangelo’s David and spending way too much money at the San Lorenzo Market. I used the pay phone in front of the Duomo to call home, just so I could tell them where I was standing. My meals included various tasty pastas or Italian style pizzas with gelato to top it off. But no matter how much fun you are having, sometimes you can’t help but miss home. So if you’re feeling a bit down, don’t worry, because in Florence you can even find a little bit of home.

At this cute little sandwich shop, you can get anything from a sandwich resembling those from Subway back home to an omelet with cheese and a Florentine twist of truffle sauce. Whether you want your sandwich hot or cold, you can’t beat these prices either. Another plus: the employees always speak English.

• Mc Donald’s
Inside & Outside the Railway Station of Santa Maria Novella
Via Cavour, 61r - Via Baracca, 114 - Via Nenni 16/3 - Viale Talenti, 92
Ok, there is no need for me to tell you what you can find at a Mc Donald’s...
You can find several in Florence, two in the area of the railway station (one inside and the other just opposite the station exit), and another (with an elegant sushi bar design) in Via Cavour plus three more just outside the city center. In other words, you can easily satisfy any homesick longings for fast-foods.
