Drop into a pub and drown a few sorrows! A glass of Beer is a social occasion...

Beer is not a drink that is limited to the summer alone. You only have to visit a pub in England to realise that! It is definitely one of the best ways of moistening a dry throat at any time of the year as well as bringing people together. On a cold winter evening, just the thought of it brings to mind the warm and friendly atmosphere to be found in most pubs, whether in Florence or abroad. A game of darts or billiards, a round of drinks, in other words, large frothing, foaming tankards of beer, a packet of crisps in the company of friends...what could be more enjoyable? In early spring and summer, it tends to bring to mind pub gardens, outside eating, sitting on a wall or wooden seat and enjoying the view or gazing at the passersby, but invariably in company. It is the same the world over and Florence is no exception to the rule.
Beer is a popular drink in Florence, partly because there is a vast student population, but also because it is most welcome among the many visitors to the city, who find it just the thing to wet their whistle after trailing around the museums or monuments, whether in the heat of summer or the cool of winter!
There are in fact a great many pubs in town, all of which manage to offer a very pleasant alternative to rival Chianti-style wine bars and offer entertainment, company and refreshments at very competative prices.

The Fiddler’s Elbow in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, 7r (tel. 055.215056) is one of the oldest pubs in Italy, open daily from 12am to 2am with space outside for sipping anything from a coffee to an alcoholic tipple (especially beer!).
