Anna Maria MediciThe last of the Medici rulers: Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici

Florence's Electress Palatine
[]

This exhibition is devoted to the last, but by no means the least, Medici ruler of Florence. It takes us back to the late Baroque splendour of the Court when the magnificent gesture carried out by the Empress Palatine and last Medici princess, brought lasting glory to her family before it finally died out.
Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici (1667-1743), the daughter of the Grand Duke Cosimo III and Marguérite-Louise d’Orléans, married the Elector Palatine in 1691.
Her name will always be linked to Florence because of the legacy she left the city. She was responsible for drawing up the famous Family Pact with her legal successors, the Lorraine family, thus ensuring that the vast art collections put together over three centuries by her family were forever to remain and be preserved where they were and never be removed from the Duchy. This farseeing women is therefore one of the most important figures in Florentine history and well deserves this exhibition dedicated to the 270th anniversary of the Family Pact.
The show offers a global view of the heritage put together by the Electress, her father Cosimo III, her brother Ferdinando and her husband Johann Wilhelm who, in their day, were among the greatest art patrons and collectors in Europe. A rich display of incredibly refined works of art - paintings, sculpture, hangings, furnishings in hard stone, bronzes, miniatures, jewellery and porcelain - collected between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, that reflect the Courts of Florence and Düsseldorf, in other words Italy, Germany and the Low Countries.
