The pure beauty of an ancient Greek statue
Apoxyomenos, Lysippus's Athlete

Apoxyomenos, the splendid Athlete attributed to Lysippus, can be admired at Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence after its recent restoration carried out by the Croatian Institute of Restoration in Zagreb in collaboration with the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence.
This magnificent Greek statue in bronze, which dates back to 6 B.C., portrays an athlete, of about two metres in height, cleaning his strigil. It was discovered in the waters off the
Island of Lussino in
Croatia in 1997 and, apart from the various problems encountered during its recovery from the sea, it has taken many years to remove all the incrustations and restore. Now, after its presentation and show in
Zagreb, it can at last be admired in its original splendour. Once the exhibition is over it will return to Croatia forever.
The
Province of Florence has organised a series of events to celebrate this unique occasion.
As the Athlete is so closely linked to sport, the exhibition will be backed up by a show of photographs that exhalt the beauty and purity of athletes and games, especially football, organised by Sergio Risaliti.
Chinese artist, Yi Zu, is instead the author of the sculpture in marble inspired by the social importance of the game of football on display in
Palazzo Medici Riccardi.
