Behind the Exhibitions

This exhibition has been organised with the idea of giving the public the chance to see part of the enormous patrimony belonging to the Photographic section of the Special Board of Florentine Museums. It is part of a series of shows that have exploited this vast material to offer an insight into some of the great exhibitions held in Florence in the past.
The Exhibition on
Italian Gardens, opened in
Palazzo Vecchio in 1931, was a particularly large and important show. Organised by Ugo Ojetti, a brilliant Italian intellectual, Count Gamba and Nello Tarchiani, it described the history of the Italian style garden in various regions of Italy and even abroad; it ranged from Pompeian and 14th century gardens to those of the Medici and the Popes, followed by Baroque and Neoclassical gardens.
A series of model theatres reproduced various types of
garden design, while other sections were dedicated to books, antique and modern fake flowers, botanical gardens, illustrations of plants and flowers, and games and amusements in villas.
The new exhibition presents a selection of 54 pictures, taken from the near 600 available, that recall the important 1931 event.
