Madonna Fucecchio

The Valley
[Nicoletta Curradi]

Part of the Piccoli Grandi Musei (Small but Great Museums) project, the Valley of Treasures - Reflected masterpieces exhibition is the latest initiative to be promoted by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio of Florence, with the contribution of the Tuscan Region. It has meant that many priceless works of art have been transferred, from wherever they are usually displayed, with the idea of enhancing the Florentine territory, one of the most important diffused museums in the world. The works of art have been transferred from the Uffizi, the Borghese Gallery and from other musems to five small museums in the area of Empoli and the Elsa Valley and placed in comparison with similar, but less famous works, from the same period or by the same author. The exhibition, curated by Rosanna Caterina Proto Pisani, is aimed to make these small but important museums better known and can be visited until November 19th.
The museums involved in the initiative are the Museum of the Collegiate of Empoli, with the Annunciation by Botticelli and by Botticini; the Civic Museum of Fucecchio with two works by Larciani; the Museum of Santa Verdiana of Castelfiorentino with works by Mariano d’Agnolo Romanelli and Francesco Valdambrino; the Museum of Religious Art of Montespertoli with two Madonnas by Filippo Lippi and lastly the Museum of Religious Art of Certaldo with two 13th century crucifixes in wood. The project also includes the complex of San Vivaldo at Montaione, where the didactic system has been renewed.
The interiors of these country Uffizi galleries boast works by Cimabue, Taddeo Gaddi, Benozzo Gozzoli and many other splendid artists and therefore deserve far more interest than they get at present. The Ente Cassa’s strategy is precisely that of promoting the value of this rich patrimony on the Florentine territory.
