Santa Maria Nuova Uffizi

Santa Maria Nuova & the Uffizi
[]

The Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Piazza Santa Maria Nuova, 1, one of the oldest and most important institutions of public assistance in Florence, was founded in 1288 by Folco Portinari, the father of Beatrice, beloved of Dante, and over the centuries became rich and powerful thanks to many bequests and donations. Folco was persuaded to build the hospital, to cure the sick, by Monna Tessa, the Portinari family’s housekeeper, buried in the old Cloister of the Ossa in the Hospital. The structure was divided into two areas (men and women) and could take in about 200 patients. In the 15th century, when the hospital was particularly wealthy, the building was transformed and enlarged, with the addition of the cloister of the Medicherie (1420), by Bicci di Lorenzo.

The exhibition at the Royal Post Office aims to be a preview of what will make up the future museum arrangement inside this ancient Hospital. Over the centuries it has accumulated an extremely rich collection of art works, some of which are on display in this show. Others come directly from the Uffizi, where they have been displayed up until now, while others again have been recovered from the Gallery’s storerooms.
Hopefully the entire collection (or at least what remains of it) will soon be housed in the new museum inside the ancient hospital.
