Cooling off in Florence
[Susan Glasspool]

S uffering from the heat? Longing for a swim after trailing round museums/studying/shopping all day? Need to freshen up?
No problem - just head for the nearest swimming pool!
One of the nicest pools - characterwise - is very probably the Pavoniere at the Cascine. Surrounded by the shady trees of the Park, it was once used to house the aviary of the Lorraine princes and therefore, from the outside at least, looks nothing like we would imagine a sports structure to look like normally, apart from the pool itself. Here you can even swim in the evenings or follow courses of exercises in the water.
Viale della Catena, Park of the Cascine. Info: Tel. 055.362233.
Another pleasant pool close to the city centre is the Nannini at Bellariva, situated alongside the Arno like the Pavoniere but upriver, on the opposite side of Florence. This well organised structure also offers evening swimming and water gym. Lungarno Aldo Moro. Info: Tel. 055.677521.

The Costoli instead is a modern swimming pool structure that caters for all ages, attached to the City Sports Stadium and Gymnasiums. Here, apart from swimming, you can also test your Italian by following up with a pizza and film (every evening) on the Terrace of the Palasport. Water exercises and other facilities are available. Viale Paoli. Info: Tel. 055.6236027.

The A. Franchi Council Pool, is a well structured multipurpose pool for summer and winter dips. It offers excellent facilities and organises courses for people of all ages, as well as of course the now popular water gym.
Viale Maratona. Info: Tel. 055.5002225.

The G. Raspini Rari Nantes Florentia pool organises courses for babies, children and adults as well as water gym. Lungarno F. Ferrucci, 24. Info: Tel. 055.6812141 - www.rarinantesflorentia.it
