The 59th edition of the Estate Fiesolana, organised by the Fiesole Town Council, is the oldest open air festival in Italy and a special favourite among Florentines and visitors alike, thanks also to its splendid setting in the Roman Amphitheatre of Fiesole, just outside Florence. The programme this year is even more interesting than usual with a series of guest stars as well as locally produced performances. Classical music and opera, ballet, theatre and jazz/pop music are highlighted by a series of special events.

Stefano Bollani directs the Vivere Jazz Festival (until July 3rd), followed by Bizet’s Carmen, and then, in July, by performances organised in collaboration with the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, Giorgio Albertazzi and ballets). The Fiesole School of Music and the Associazione Nuovi Eventi Musicali propose a series of concerts throughout the festival.
Another popular annual event is the Florence Dance Festival with performances that are particularly spectacular in this unique setting. The 40th edition of the Fiesole Masters of the Cinema Award goes this year to Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki with a rich programme of celebrative films. Then a play in collaboration with the Teatro Metastasio (Prato) and Occupazioni Farsesche, African dances, Anthony and Cleopatra by Shakespeare from St. Petersburg and Matthew Spender exhibits sculptures in the Archaeological area and the Basilica of Sant’Alessandro.
