Great Summer Fun
[
Susan Glasspool]

Young people, and the young at heart, can find an incredible number of ways to amuse themselves in the evenings this summer.
After a long day studying or visiting museums and monuments, nothing is better than sitting down and relaxing with a cool drink to listen to a concert or poetry reading in one of the city squares. Apart from the organised events, dozens of improvised performances can of course be seen by just wandering through the streets.
Here is a rough guide of places and events that, time and energy permitting, are certainly worth investigating in the evening, though part of the fun is discovering things for oneself.
This year’s
Summer Festival programme, entitled Look of Innocence and already well under way, makes use of many of the important city squares like
Piazza della Signoria, where you can enjoy some really special concerts, while others will host a variety of events throughout the summer.
The
Boboli Gardens act as a focal point for various performances that range from concerts to theatre, with plenty of entertainment in the other city parls, like the
Cascine,
Porta Romana,
Anconella and, slightly further afield, at
Villa Stibbert,
Vogel,
Fabbricotti,
Favard,
Pozzolini, Strozzi, Il
Ventaglio and
Villa Reale at Sesto, and the Lippi, Le Piagge, Sorgane, Boschetto, Pettini and San Salvi areas.
A rich programme of concerts, poetry and films flit their way through other sites like the
Leopolda Station, the
Bargello Gardens and Cloisters of the Oblate, the Church of San Gaetano in Piazza Antinori,
Orsanmichele, the
Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, the Goldenetta workshop and
Fort Belvedere. Classical music, jazz, pop and electronic music come into their own during the Florence Summer Festival, with major events starring artists like Philip Glass,
Ligabue,
Battiato and
Hevia,
Massimo Ranieri,
Mauro Pagani,
Florence’s Maggio Orchestra and other orchestras and groups of international fame.
Exhibitions, poetry, readings, ballet, theatre, laboratories, guided visits and films - even the Arno becomes a stage with theatre performances on the water - will continue right through to September. The
Florence Dance Festival will instead be held in the Roman Amphitheatre as part of the summer festival in Fiesole.
