Tired shoesMay and June offer invitations to runners

Running through Florence
[Susan Glasspool]

The 33rd Guarda Firenze (Look at Florence), is a marathon race that starts out and arrives in Piazza Duomo. It is open to children, students and adults, in other words, whoever wants to join in.
A sporting cum tourist event, its route through the city highlights the many attractions and splendid monuments and is an attempt to encourage a healthy way of life, both physically and psychologically, as this has been proved to be the best preventive medicine. The Look event includes the Mini-Run for the young, a fit-walking race (you must take a special test to take part), and the 10km Look at Florence marathon itself. Inscription is usually required 2-3 days before and you need to be fit!

Sunday May 7th at 9.30am.
The famous 100 km Passatore race is an international event that was originally created to commemorate the birth of Dante, believed to have taken place between May 24th and June 15th. A ceremony in the presence of the official banners or gonfalons of Florence, Ravenna and Faenza, is held before it starts. Departure is from Piazza della Signoria and then the race passes through Fiesole, Olmo, Borgo San Lorenzo, Ronta, Passo della Colla and Marradi.
Saturday May 27th at 3pm

Perhaps a less demanding alternative is the 67th edition of the spectacular St. John Nocturnal Race, a national track event of 10km that is run through the city in the evening, with departure and arrival from Piazza San Giovanni. Promoted by the City Council and the Society of St. John the Baptist, the event forms part of the traditional festivities for St. John the Baptist, the Patron Saint of Florence.
Saturday June 17th at 9pm.
