Your Residence Permit

obtaining your Residence PermitIf you come from outside the European Community, after obtaining a Student Visa in your home country you also need to apply for a Residence Permit (permesso di soggiorno) by registering with the Police Headquarters within 8 days of your arrival in Italy.

In Florence you should go to the
Questura which is located in Via Zara, 2
(Piazza San Marco area) and submit the following documents:

- four passport-size photos of yourself, each signed along the side;
- proof of solvency (a photocopy of your credit card or travellers checks);
- photocopies of the photo page and of the Italian visa page of your passport;
- a letter from the school accepting you in a study program;
- a tax stamp (marca da bollo) worth € 10,33 (buy it from any tobacconist’s);
- a filled-in application form which you can obtain from the Questura;
- proof of health insurance valid for the length of your expected stay in Italy, which may be:
* a photocopy of your private health insurance covering all medical costs;
* forms E111, E106, E107, E109, E110 from another EC country;
* a receipt of your payment to an Italian Insurance company which you can make at any Post Office. The deposit slip (bollettino) should be made payable to: INA (Le Assicurazioni d’Italia) on account (conto corrente) number 71270003. You should pay € 38,74 for up to 6 months or € 77,47 for 12 months.

Please remember that wherever photocopies are required you should also bring the original documents with you in order to allow officials to counter-check their conformity.

To renew your Residence Permit you need to produce all the above again one month prior to the expiration date, including evidence of the renewal of your health insurance and your present Residence Permit.
