The Maggio or May Festival
[]

The 69th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino or May Music Festival opens at the Teatro Comunale on April 20th and continues until June 23rd. The Maggio is Italy’s oldest and most important music festival, founded in 1933, and packs in two months of stimulating musical performances. In more ways than one, it is rather like a wedding, a musical union, for it always has something new, something borrowed and something blue, definitely not to be missed, for it is a guarantee of wonderful music performed by some of the world’s most professional artists.

Due to financial cuts, this year’s programme only includes one opera staging, Verdi’s Falstaff (in three acts with texts by Arrigo Boito), which will be performed at the Teatro Comunale. Conducted by Zubin Mehta, very popular in Florence as well as being the theatre’s principal conductor for years, Falstaff will be directed by Luca Ronconi, famous for his original stage solutions.

The orchestra is of course the historic Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Musicale Fiorentino and Chorus of the same name. Performances on May 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 19th.
The Festival itself opens at the Teatro Verdi with a concert of music by Wagner and Mahler conducted by Daniele Gatti (April 30th and May 4th).
A rich series of symphony and chamber concerts, many dedicated to Mozart, fill in the other evenings of the Festival, among them an interesting Piano Marathon on May 11th. Zubin Mehta will conduct three concerts in all, including a Happy Birthday concert to celebrate his 70th birthday, though this precedes the opening of the festival.

Other leading world conductors highlighting the festival are Daniele Gatti, who opens the event, Antonello Manicorda, Federico Maria Sardelli, Lorin Maazel, with the New York Philharmonic, Carlo Montanaro, Giuseppe Mega and Ivor Bolton, who conducts the last but glorious closing concert in Piazza del Duomo on June 23rd. Ballet is not forgotten thanks to the staging of Callas, with choreography by Reinhild Hoffmann, at the Pergola from June 8th to 14th. Curiously enough Maria Callas made her debut here at the Comunale. The festival is completed by various conferences, talks and exhibitions (entrance free).
