Papa gregorioand the invention of the Middle Ages

Pope Gregory the Great
[Susan Glasspool]

Papa gregorioYou may well ask who he was...though this Pope was perhaps one of the greatest intellectuals of his time.
2004 marked the 14th centenary of the death of Pope Gregory Great (Pope from 590 to 604). He was one of the most important Roman popes and one of the greatest writers in the early Middle Ages. He was also a politician of standing as he had diplomatic relations with Constantinople, the Visigoths, the French and especially the Lombards. He kept up a busy correspondence with politicians and clerics in both East and West and many of his letters have survived (over 800).
A deeply spiritual man and Biblical scholar, he wrote the oldest and most important biography on St. Benedict of Norcia. He has come to represent the beginning of the Middle Ages and Christian unity in Europe, which was strengthened by the mission he sent to England.
The exhibition itself, hosted at the Laurentian Library, is one of the many events surrounding the Gregorian celebrations. The 40 codexes on display include some of the most significant written by Pope Gregory, on loan from various libraries in Europe, and other extremely interesting early medieval illuminated manuscripts that reflect the evolution of this art in Europe. Many could be considered milestones in librarian art history, a great fresco, where the work of Gregory the Great stands out as one of the principal inspirations of medieval Christian culture and the beginning of the modern era.
The exhibition wil be backed up by an international convention in Florence dedicated to the Pope and the results of his work, from May 13th to 17th, as well as a concert in the Basilica of Santa Croce.
