St. Joseph’s Day to Easter
[Susan Glasspool]

March comes in with a sweet swing and the celebrations for Father’s Day (in Italy) and St. Joseph's Day, two feasts that are fast becoming a commercial treat for many stores!

Traditionally however the Florentines celebrate the event with St. Joseph fritters, miniature doughnut-type rice cakes flavoured with raisins and orange peel. The sweet-toothed can find many frittelle or fritter festivals in and around Florence. Most baker's shops sell them and, while you are about it, you should try the delicious chocolate flavoured Lenten biscuits or Quaresimali.

Easter recipes include bread-like raisin-stuffed Rosemary buns (rather like our Hot Cross Buns), which are not oversweet. Sweet Easter flat bread is typical of southern Tuscany and made with ricotta, while the sweet aniseed flavoured Pasimata bread hails from Lucca.

The most popular Easter cake is of course the sweet, eggy Colomba or Dove Cake, containing candied orange peel and topped with sugared and sliced almonds. It is shaped like a dove, the symbol of peace, and therefore a perfect dessert for Easter meals. More modern versio sns can come covered in chocolate or with cream fillings, but try the real thing first either in a restaurant or straight from a local bakery.
