Celebrate Irish St. Patrick
[
Susan Glasspool]

All Celts, and especially the Irish, will be heading for Saschall, Florence’s very original theatre in a tent, for the Feast of Ireland 2006. Six evenings dedicated to Irish traditions with folk dancing, meetings, tastings, live concerts by important folk groups from Italy and abroad, and other forms of entertainment, plus beer and typical Irish dishes. The Feast of Ireland has been held in Florence for 11 years running and will presumably continue in the future, though it will be somewhat hard to find real Leprechauns there. However it is definitely a good excuse for the romantic and mystical Irish to let their hair down! The celebrations are of course centred around St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th), when anyone who is called Patrick or Patricia can enter the festival free of charge and the atmosphere becomes really red-hot! This feast day is moreover crammed with events dedicated to St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. Few people, and especially the Irish can resist the sound of fiddles, pipes and bodhráns or stop themselves from dancing to an Irish jig, while the delicious Irish whiskey, stout or Guiness readily flows to quench thirsty throats after all the singing and dancing!
And, if you are feeling homesick and arrived too early or too late to enjoy all the festivities, don’t forget that there are plenty of Irish pubs in town that are ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day throughout the year!
The
Fiddler’s Elbow in
Piazza Santa Maria Novella, 7r (tel. 055.215056) is one of the oldest pubs in Italy open daily from 12am to 2am with space outside for sipping anything from a coffee to an alcoholic tipple (especially beer!).
The Old Stove in Via Pellicceria 2/4r (tel. 055.284640) is open from 12 noon till 2.30am. Here you can choose from a wide selection of Irish beers and delicious Irish appetizers. On fine evenings you can also sit outside.
Its twin establishment, The Lion’s Fountain, is located in Borgo ALbizi 34r (tel. 055.2344412) and open daily from 6pm till 2.30am. It boasts an outdoor patio and provides music, snacks, dinner, sandwiches as well as international sports & video-sat circuit with US sport events.
The Old Stove and The
Lion’s Fountain organize their own St. Patrick’s week between March 10th and 17th with Irish whiskey and Irish Cream tastings, cakes, special discounts and gifts.
