Do it the Italian way
Shopping for food in Florence
[
Alice Whittle]

Now you have been in Florence for a while – and having perhaps sampled the various restaurants and trattorie near your lodgings – you should try taking the daunting step of cooking yourself an Italian meal.
Firstly you need to go shopping for food. This could very well appear to be fairly easy, but if you immediately show your local grocer how little you know, or ask for the impossible, you might find your stay turning into a living nightmare. Therefore you must start with something fairly simple and buy what you need for an undemanding Italian mid-week meal. You should try your luck in one of those small food shops that still abound in the centre of Florence, that sell everything from soap powder to fruit and vegetables. They can easily supply everything you require.
If you want to get a little practice in first before attempting real food shopping, you could start by simply buying a couple of bottles of mineral water but, while you are about it, closely observe the other customers. The ideal model to choose is a smiling and somewhat overweight housewife, with a natural bent for chatting. Of course you haven’t a chance of reaching her expertise in sampling a sliver of pecorino cheese or choosing the best cut of ham, but you can at least see how she goes about it. A few basic tricks and you will soon learn or look as if you know how to shop Italian style.
