Florence MarathonIf you are a running enthusiast, sign on for the 22nd Florence Marathon on Sunday November 27th. It is a mega international event that takes over the entire city and is not limited to the Florentines alone! There is a basic inscription charge but it won't break the bank and disabled athletes can participate free. Its fascination comes from its route through the city centre, a route covering 42,195 km surrounded by centuries of art, history and culture. It is thus a unique event for the thousands of sportsmen and running enthusiasts who come to take part in it every year from all over the world.

This year the route is slightly different but the race still starts from Piazzale Michelangelo, goes down towards Porta Romana and then passes through the narrow streets of San Frediano and the Oltrarno area. Leaving the breathtaking Ponte Vecchio behind, it turns off onto Lungarno before wheeling back towards the centre again along Via Aretina. From Piazza Alberti and Via Mannelli it heads for Viale Malta and from here into Viale Fanti, before turning back towards Piazza Alberti again. After running through the old city centre, the athletes take a turn around the Cascine park before starting the final lap of the race, which retraces its steps through the city centre as far as Piazza Santa Croce. Most of the route is on tarmac roads and on fairly level ground.
The Marathon Expò with its fair and services for the athletes will be held in the Luigi Ridolfi athletics stadium. Open on November 25th-26th from 10am to 8pm.
The classical non-competitive Minirun, dedicated to children and families (about 2 kilometres) starts and finishes in Piazza Santa Croce.

The main Marathon departure is from Piazzale Michelangiolo on Sunday November 27th at 9am.
