If you are looking for a really characteristic nd typical Tuscan trattoria, you only have to cross the Arno at the Ponte Vecchio and turn right into Borgo San Jacopo where you can find the Trattoria Mamma Gina at nr. 37r (tel 055.2396009). One of Florence's best-loved trattorias, it is in fact also known as "the typical Tuscan trattoria" and the name is more than appropriate as it offers a wide assortment of really traditional soups, typical hors d'oeuvres, pasta and mouthwatering grilled specialities. The trattoria's grilled fillet of steak for lovers of really good meat is quite unforgettable, the environment is pleasant and the service excellent.
Housed in a 15th century palace with vaulted ceilings and furnished in an elegant yet rustic style, the restaurant was established in the early Fifties when Signora Gina started cooking meals for the workmen dredging sand from the Arno for use in the many building sites involved in repairing the damage caused by the bombings of World War II. Now run by Marino Cinali, Mamma Gina still offers traditional-style cooking based on genuine, simple, delicious dishes of times past. Many famous personalities from the Italian and international political, cultural and theatrical scene are regular diners here.
The huge wine cellar includes the finest classical Chianti and a wide selection of Tuscan wines together with all the best Italian and international wines.
This perfect place to dine is completed by the friendly and helpful staff who manage to create a wonderfully hospitable atmosphere that is yet another demonstration what Florence can offer.throughout the year.
