restoration work on Filippo Lippi's frescoes in the cathedral of Prato

As close as you can get
[Dolores Maria Jimenez]

restoration work on Filippo Lippi's frescoes in the Cathedral of PratoLeave the cradle of the Renaissance for half a day and take trip to the nearby city of Prato (hardly 15 minutes away by frequent trains). In the capital of Tuscany's textile industry, recently grown independent of Florence as a Province in its own right, you will be able to admire the beautiful and historic buildings of the walled city center.

Additionally, if you take care to organize your visit on a Thursday evening, for the whole of July you will also have the opportunity to admire an astonishing cycle of frescoes from an exclusive perspective, suspended some ten metres above the choir of a churh.

In the cathedral of Santo Stefano every Thursday evening at 9pm visitors will in fact be allowed to climb up the scaffolding to the restoration worksite on Filippo Lippi's frescoes. You shouldn't miss this extraordinary opportunity to get to know a great artist and his masterpiece, led by an expert guide from Associazione FareArte (on request visits can also be booked in English, French, German and Spanish).

It will be a unique experience. With your nose hardly a few inches away from a masterpiece dating from the second half of the 15th c. you will have a rare opportunity to admire face to face the surprising colors and figures produced over 500 years ago by the hand and brush of this artist. The lives of St. Stephen ( on the left wall) and of St. John the Baptist (right wall) - surmounted by a vaulted ceiling with the four Evangelists - were painted by Lippi between 1452 and 1465, and they are deservedly considered one of this artist's highest achievements.

The ongoing restoration work - which started in 2001 and is thought to last into 2005 - has already uncovered many hidden or long lost details that anyone interested will find explained and analyzed on the beautiful and detailed website
