PianoThe autumn-winter season of classical music, opera and ballet opens from September, and as usual there are plenty of quality events for classical music lovers. First on the list is the new seaon of the Teatro del Maggio, in Corso Italia whose opera and concert season opens in September with Verdi’s opera I Lombardi and continues with Tancredi by Gioachino Rossini in October, followed by the Traviata (Verdi), Turandot (Puccini) and a wonderful selection of concerts through to April, after which the May Music Festival opens. Teatro Verdi re-opens its doors after the summer with the Orchestra della Toscana’s Music in September and Sunday morning aperitif concerts, followed by the main body of the programme from November (Info: Tel. 055.2340710). The Teatro della Pergola is as usual very active with its theatre season (Info: Tel. 055.22641), as well as with the Amici della Musica season, which seems to improve in quality every year. Info: Tel. 055.608420..
Florence Symphonietta is based at the Church of Santo Stefano al Ponte Vecchio, another histroic venue, with concerts more or less throughout the year. (Info: Tel. 055.477805).

If you venture as far as Fiesole stop off at San Domenico to visit (on request) the famous Music School which also holds Sunday morning concerts “for our friends”. It is housed in Villa La Torraccia set among the cypress trees and greenery so typical of the hillside of Fiesole. Info: Tel. 055.597851.

If you are at a loss as what to do on a Sunday morning, you can always go to one of the A.Gi.Mus. concerts (entrance free) from October at the Careggi Hospital Auditorium, almost in the country and close to the Medici Villa so greatly loved by Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent. Info: Tel. 055.580996.
