Beer - the cool summer drink
[Susan Glasspool]

two beer or not two beerBeer is a popular drink throughout the year. In the winter just the thought of it brings to mind the warm and friendly atmosphere to be found in most pubs, whether in Florence or abroad.

A game of darts, a round of drinks, frothing, foaming beer in large tankards and the company of friends...what could be more enjoyable?

In summer however it tends to bring to mind pub gardens, outside eating, sitting on a wall or wooden seat and enjoying the view or looking at the passersby, though invariably in company. It is the same the world over and Florence is no exception, though it may be hotter than many people are used to!

For this reason beer is particularly popular in Florence in the summer months as it is just the thing to wet your whistle after trailing around one of the museums or monuments, which, although air conditioned or anyway cool inside, do require a relaxing reward when you emerge into the hot sunshine!

Piazza Santa Maria Novella for instance hosts The Fiddler's Elbow (7r), with its open-air terrace overlooking the beautiful square.
The Old Stove in Via Pellicceria 2/4r and The Lion's Fountain in Borgo Albizi 34r are two traditional pubs that also offer outdoor seating and right in the heart of the city centre. Here you can enjoy traditional Irish food, music, desserts and beer.

On the south side of the Arno, you can find Oio in Piazza Piattellina, again with an outside terrace, where you can find a wide selection of beers and delicious snacks and gastronomic specialities.
