courtyard of the Medici Riccardi Palace

The long lost Medici Museum
[Maddalena Delli]

Palazzo Medici Riccardi on Via Cavour (formerly Via Larga) was built by Michelozzo in the 1440s as a Medici residence near the family church of San Lorenzo. Later the palace was sold to the Riccardi family and today it houses the offices of the Prefecture and of the Province. In 1929 a Medici Museum was opened on the ground floor of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, but the project was not successful and its memory has long faded. The exhibition "Stanze Segrete - Stanze Scomparse" (Secret Rooms - Vanished Rooms) traces the history of this Medici Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy again some precious exhibits from the Medici collections which have remained hidden to the eyes of the general public since then, including portraits, seascapes, still lives and landscapes.

The exhibition is open 9am-7pm daily except Wed. until Sept. 28th
