Leonardo da VinciVinci Celebrates

Leonardo & Optics
[Susan Glasspool]

Leonardo Museum VinciThe Leonardo Museum is arranged in the rooms of Palazzina Uzielli and the Castle of the Counts Guidi (11th-12th century) inside the medieval town walls and dominates the town of Vinci from above. It was first opened on April 15th 1953, the date of the conclusion of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the birth of Leonardo. Since then the museum area has been enlarged, becoming more specialized, and now contains one of the largest and most original collections of machines and models by Leonardo, inventor, technologist and engineer.

After its enlargement into Palazzina Uzielli in June 2004, the Leonardo Museum of Vinci is now opening a new room, dedicated to the subject of optics, in its rooms in the Castle of the Counts Guidi. The room has been arranged so as to document Leonardo’s physical and anatomical theories on the physics of light and will be called The optics of Leonardo between Alhazen and Kepler.
A study day on physical optics will be held on the same day as the inauguration of the new room dedicated to optics, with a seminar from 10am to 6.00pm in the Leonardo Library and the participation of internationally renowned scholars like Kim Veltman and Tito Arecchi.
