DiladdarnoCross over to the south bank of the Arno

A new edition of Diladdarno
[Jill Scott]

DiladdarnoDiladdarno 2005, organised by the Comitato Oltrarno Promuove (Oltrarno Promotion Committee), in collaboration with the City Council Office for Economic Promotion, with CNA, Confcommercio, Confesercenti and the Chamber of Commerce, offers two weeks of extremely interesting artistic, cultural and economic events. The new version of this traditional Spring event involves all the city quarters on the left bank of the Arno.

Between May 7th and 22nd you can make the most of a series of new initiatives, all with free entrance, that are designed to spotlight this varied and historic part of Florence, vibrant with life and the true expression of its soul. The initiative is bursting with attractions aimed to pinpoint this busy and dynamic area that combines tradition and novelty and carried out thanks to a cohesion between the city’s institutions, associations and inhabitants.

Basically an itinerary to help discover the social, cultural and economic fabric of the Oltrarno district, the events include exhibitions of photographs by Carlo Cantini and Sandra Nastri and a documentary show by the Oltrarno Centre of Photographic Documentation with an interesting and unique collection of pictures of Oltrarno from the 19th to the early 20th century.

Apart from this you can find many tiny markets in the squares, musical events and other entertainment. It is a wonderful chance to stroll around the streets and discover the many facets of the Oltrarno.

You can also visit the Historic Museum of the Bersaglieri (Italian infantry) and an exhibition of wooden reproductions of machines designed by Leonardo in the Cloisters of Ammannati in the Military Barracks in Piazza S. Spirito. Piazza Pitti and Borgo S. Jacopo instead host a fine display of vintage cars, while an exhibition of artistic crafts in typical Firenzuola stone can be admired in the Church of Santa Monica.

As for entertainment, you can choose from an evening of Irish music with the Dalriada group, a circus performance offered by the Cantiere Ikrea Association in Piazza S. Spirito, or a concert by the “Anni d’argento” group from the Senior Citizens Centre in Piazza Cestello, as well as a display by the Bersaglieri Military Band for the 53rd rally of the corps.

Therefore come along if you are interested in enjoying the atmosphere, discovering the history and absorbing the unique spirit of the Oltrarno as well as joining in the fun and proposed events...
