Dancingthe perfect free dinner

An Aperitif you gotta have it!
[Asli Sevinc]

AperiourFor students in Italy, aperitivo might just mean the perfect free dinner. However, for Italians an aperitif means much more. Going out for aperitif is an important part of the young Italians' lives: it provides a medium to socialize, to have a drink or two after a long, tiring day of work, or just to meet new people at the bar.

In Florence, a good number of bars and cafes offer aperitifs after 6 o'clock. The basics include snacks like chips, peanuts, olives, cherry tomatoes, pop corn and the like. There are often cold dishes like mini sandwiches, canapès and little pizzas that are easy to grab by hand. In Florence, popular dishes include Tuscan delicacies like crostini con pomodori - toasted Tuscan bread with tomatoes and basil - and delicious 'focacce' made with olive oil and different kinds of cheese. Sounds yummy and perfect for a light dinner? Yes indeed, but if you want to do it the Italian way, don't gorge on aperitifs in the middle of that hip bar, because an aperitif is never meant to substitute a real hot Italian dinner.

Speaking of the Italian way, Porfirio Rubirosa on Viale Strozzi 18/20r has managed to combine it with the Japanese way: the ultimate pleasure of sushi and the Tuscan aperitif. What makes this trendy bar, isolated from the touristy spots of Florence, very special is that the first drink comes accompanied by freshly rolled sushi, as well as the regular aperitifs served every evening. Another reason to discover Porfirio Rubirosa is their special theme nights three days a week: Wednesdays are the "Tuscan aperitifs", Thursdays are the "Latin" music and Fridays are the World Music nights. You could also go up to the restaurant at the second floor to order from the menu, or wait for Tuesdays to take advantage of their five course fixed menu to fill up with loads of sushi.

Got the munchies already for good food, chill music and a hip atmosphere? Now, you know where to go!
