Cardinal Richelie

More about the Show
[Susan Glasspool]

Cardinal RichelieThe exhibition is divided into several sections.

The first covers the Medici court in the late 16th century with several portraits, by such artists as Scipione Pulzone and Santi di Tito. These are accompanied by a series of works and objects that Maria would have normally seen during her childhood and that taught her the importance that art could have on politics. Paintings by Alessandro Allori, Jacopo Ligozzi, Cigoli, Empoli, Santi di Tito and objects from the Grand Ducal workshops by Buontalenti and Giambologna.

The second section is dedicated to the festivities - performances, music and costumes - held for Maria’s wedding, as well as many written documents and period textiles. Note the newly restored painting of the Wedding at Canaan, showing Maria in her wedding gown, by Alessandro Allori, and a large privately owned canvas of Maria disembarking at Marseilles by the school of Rubens.

The section dedicated to France illustrates French painting during Maria’s reign and regency, including commissions given to Italian artists. Paintings by Philippe de Champaigne, Laurent de La Hyre, Horace Le Blanc, Nicolas Freminet, Claude Vignon, Frans Pourbus and Simon Vouet as well as the Italian Orazio Gentileschi and others.
