The Fifth Centenary of Michelangelo’s statue of David (1504–2004).
Perfect Form for David
[
Lorenzo Fanti]

To celebrate the fifth centenary of
Michelangelo’s
statue of David (1504–2004), the prestigious Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence is opening its doors, exceptionally and for the first time, to five of the most important international contemporary artists whose works of art, specially executed for the occasion, will circle the David in the Tribuna.
The exhibition Forms for the David – directed and coordinated by Franca Falletti, curated by Bruno Corà and with the scientific coordination of Chiara d’Afflitto and Carlo Sisi –is a unique event, a historic encounter between the contemporary and the classical, and an opportunity to observe the relationship between the sixteenth-century masterpiece and the works of these five great contemporary artists: Georg Baselitz, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Robert Morris and Thomas Struth
The exhibition is part of a broad project organised by the Soprintendenza per il Polo museale fiorentino Florentine Museums Office) aimed at stimulating critical reflection on Michelangelo’s statue and its continuing importance in the modern day.
Franca Falletti, the director of the Accademia, explains: ‘Why do we organise an encounter between Michelangelo and contemporary artists? Because in the life and works of Michelangelo we see the start of the process that was to lead to the death of the classical that is one of the key aspects of contemporary art’.
In the words of Bruno Corà: ‘With the works by Baselitz, Fabro, Kounellis, Morris and in the photography of Struth, we have tried to encourage some of the most significant statements of the last few decades on the continuing issue of the crisis of form, something that has developed radically since the role of the observer underwent profound change with regard to the definition of form’.
