Discovering the hidden heart of the city along 3 easy itineraries
Dive into the Craftsmen District
[
APT Firenze]

There are a thousand different ways of visiting and discovering the centre of Florence: among the most interesting are the traditional artistic craftsmen laboratories and the ancient typical
food markets. The best way is to move around on foot, wandering through the maze of narrow streets of the popular districts of Oltrarno, San Lorenzo and Sant’Ambrogio, to discover the workshops of the expert craftsmen who preserve and hand down the ancient skills of their trade, and the traditional food markets. The Florentine Chamber of Commerce, the Provincial government of Florence and APT, the Florence Tourism Board, organize and offer to tourists special itineraries to enjoy some of the most fascinating and lesser-known aspects of the city.
The Oltrarno is the hearthland of artisan in Florence, packed with ancient workshops displaying the unique artefacts and the manual expertise of artistic craftsmanship, where everything is still made by hand through laborious and painstaking daily work; a labyrinth of shops and workshops, of master craftsmen and small firms, where manual skill comes together with intuition and good taste to give life to works which are frequently unique.
San Lorenzo is the monumental district of the Medici family, crammed with masterpieces, where the Central Market, with its airy wrought iron structure, welcomes citizens and tourists looking for special treats. Sant’Ambrogio is one of the most authentic popular and at the same time fashionable boroughs, where lecturers from the Florence University and young smart professionals, side by side to elderly housewives and local restaurant owners, shop daily from the colourful and witty greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers.
All three districts are open-air museums, and an extraordinary heritage of traditions offers itself to visitors interested in bringing away with them another memory of Florence to set alongside the classic, monumental impression, made of great artistic masterpieces.
Visitors can follow different itineraries, accompanied by a professional tour guide in the visit of some craftsman workshops of the Oltrarno or of the traditional food markets of San Lorenzo and Sant’Ambrogio. Both options are of course enriched by an explanation of the artistic and monumental environment.
The guided tours, accompanied by professional tour guides, are completely free.
The tours last 3 hours and take place on Monday and Thursday afternoon for the Oltrarno, and on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for the San Lorenzo and Sant’Ambrogio markets
