In Florence, city busses are operated by Ataf. If you are a student and under 26 years of age, you can apply for a discounted monthly bus pass allowing you unlimited travel on all Ataf lines for as little as € 20.70. You can purchase the bus pass from any ATAF vendor (usually tobacconists' and newsagents' as well as many bars) but first you will need to apply for a photocard (issued by the Ataf office outsidee the train station) by providing a passport-size photo and some document from your school proving your student status.
A variety of other bus companies operate regular services to other cities and towns in Tuscany. This can be an inexpensive and highly convenient way of traveling to several tourist destinations of artistic and natural beauty. It will also allow you to get acquainted with the area, to enjoy some lovely countryside and – last but certainly not least – to mix with the natives.
