Florentine Clubs explained From Disco to Disco

The Summer is almost over but until around mid-September – depending on the weather – it is still possible to enjoy the open air venues at Le Murate in via dell'Agnolo, at Le Rampe in piazza Poggi, at San Salvi, in piazza Demidoff and at La Vasca in the Fortezza da Basso gardens. Two major clubs, Central Park and Rio Grande, both located in the Cascine Park near Ponte alla Vittoria, are open all year round. In the Fall they will close their garden dancefloors, but they will continue indoors to provide buffets, aperitifs and dance music throughout the Winter season.
In the second half of September the most popular indoor clubs and cafés will launch their Winter seasons. The first openings are those of Maracanà and Yab – both in the center – on Thu. 18th September. Since 1991 Maracanà is the leading Florentine venue for Brazilian nights, with a well-established successfull formula: first a Brazilian dinner and show; then the floor (and even the tables!) are cleared for guests to dance to commercial and Latin-American music till dawn. On the opening night admission is free for everyone.
While Maracanà allows informal clothes, the Yab club requires an elegant and fine look. With a thoroughly renovated decor and also a new space for art exhibitions (to display your works, phone 335.341042 for details), Yab offers hip hop, house, funky, commercial, chill-out, lounge and live music. The club will also host Italian and international guests, including Ravin dj from the Buddha Bar in Paris once a month. Dinner is served from 9:30pm, and the club is open daily except Wed. and Sun. This season the Yab will launch a special discount card for foreign students.
Fri. 19th September will see the grand opening of the Tenax club. Located not far from the airport, Tenax has been one of city’s favourite clubs for over twenty years, with a guest list which last year included names such as Thievery Corporation, Bob Sinclar and Claude Challe. The music selection features house, happy-house, chill-out and lounge. On the ground floor Tenax confirms its successful program including a fashion night called “The Cage" on Fridays and "Nobody's Perfect" on Saturdays. On the first floor guests will find a renovated "Artube", and "Mum", a new space with a wine bar and chill-out atmosphere, where each Friday, the resident dj will be Christelle, famous in clubs such as Nirvana Lounge in Paris, Pacha in Barcellona and Vip Rooms in Saint Tropez.
Universale another popular club located on the left side of the Arno very close to the city center, will open the following week, on Wednesday 23th September. Universale is a fascinating and a very stylish venue and is open from Wed. to Sun. This Winter, guest djs from European clubs will provide international music selections, but there will also be live music performances and Italian hits. Besides, at the Universale you can dine until 0.30am, while on Wed. and Sun. you can enjoy tempting buffets. For foreign students with proof of identity admission is free except on Wednesday.
Lastly, on Thu. 25th September the Costes club (in Sesto Fiorentino, not far from the Tenax) will open with Luca Agnelli dj from the Pineta, one of the most famous clubs in the Adriatic coast. Agnelli will be a permanent feature at the Costes on the first Thu. of each month. Costes is open Thu.-Sat each week. Thursdays are devoted to commercial house music, sometimes with live performances. Fridays are dedicated to women with shows, fascinating dancers and ambient, chill out and lounge music, with extraordinary international guests including Ravin dj (in October). Saturday nights will offer revival and commercial music. This club is a fine venue requiring formal clothes; admission is € 20.00, but discounts will be available.
If you can’t live without celebrating Halloween night, you will be glad to hear that the feast has become quite popular in Italy over the past few years, and more and more venues and clubs organize special parties. This year Halloween is on a Friday night and Tenax, Central Park, Rio Grande, Yab, Flog – as well as many pubs and bars – will not fail to schedule themed parties.
