PIzzafew things you probably didn't know about pizza

Pizza Trivia
[Maddalena Delli]

Pizza and news"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore...", sang Dean Martin in the 1950s. Meanwhile, celebrities of Italian origin such as Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio all devoured pizzas, and a humble, unassuming Southern Italian meal suddenly became all the rage in America and worldwide.

Today, Americans eat an estimated 100 acres of pizza per day, and an average of 23 pounds of pizza per person each year. Pizza being is second only to hamburgers as America's favorite food. Although the history of pizza are rooted in early Mediterranean history, pizza as we know it today is only comparatively recent, since tomato was unknown in Europe until it was imported from America a couple of centuries ago.

The best part of it all is, pizza is actually a healthy food! It contains vitamin A in the tomato sauce, protein and calcium in the mozzarella cheese, and complex carbohydrates in the dough and olive oil. With its endless combination of topping, its also a crowd-pleaser. For vegetarians, it poses no threat of unwanted meat. For the lactose intolerant, tomato pizza is the way to go. For those that must avoid acidic tomato sauce, white pizza is the option.

Gluten-free pizza has even been made available recently, and in Florence you can order it at Il Portale Bistrot & Wine Bar located by the train station in via Alamanni 29 (tel. 055.212992).
