May 28th will see the release of the movie
Pontormo, an Italian production starring Joe Mantegna in the title role as the Florentine Mannerist
painter Jacopo Carrucci, best known as
Pontormo after the hamlet Pontorme, his birthblace near Empoli. Shot between July and September 2002 in various Florentine locations including
piazza Santissima Annunziata, the
Santa Maria Novella cloisters, the
Horne Foundation, the
Galluzzo Carthusian monastery and
Palazzo Vecchio, the movie is set in Florence during the late
Renaissance and relates the dramatic final months in the life of the painter. Based on his personal journals, it describes the relationship between the painter - in his early sixties at the time and busy working on a (now lost) Final Judgment fresco in the choir of the church of San Lorenzo - and his newly-found muse Anna, a Flemish tapestry weaver in exile whose tongue was cut out during the war in the Flanders and who in Florence is accused of witchcraft.
