Abetone Pyramid covered in snow

The Twin Pyramids
[Rocco Barisci]

An odd feature you will notice at once when reaching the Abetone main square are two little twin pyramids.

They were built in 1777 in honor of Pietro Leopoldo (the grand duke of Tuscany) and Francesco III (the duke of Modena), when the two sections of road they had planned and built joined at the summit, opening a new major commercial thoroughfare across the Appennines.

In fact the name of the nearby village of Doganaccia stems from the customs office that was set up along the newly built main road at the border between the Granducato di Toscana and the Ducato di Modena.
