Chocodays in Monsummano
[
Maddalena Delli]

It's a three-day feat for chocoholics. Held over the fourth weekend in January, Cioccolosità fills the streets of the quiet spa town of Monsummano with people eager to taste the heavenly delights of handmade chocolate: creams, pralines, chocolate drinks and cocktails, candies, cakes and icecream to name but a few. From Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th of January, the leading master chocolatiers from several parts of Italy will team up here to present their best blends, handmade with genuine ingredients and in strict compliance with proven traditional methods.
Now in its fifth year, Cioccolosità was started to preserve and celebrate chocolate making as an art form after the European Union authorized vegetable fat as a substitute for cocoa butter in chocolate making. Several sites in Monsummano (notably villa Renatico Martini, piazza Giusti and the Fattoria Medicea) will house themed displays, tastings, worksops and contests, while visitors will be able to sample and buy only the best - strictly handmade - cocoa chocolate. Special sections will explore the delightful universe of matching chocolate with wine, spirits and coffee.
One piece of practical advice: be smart and leave your cars behind. From Florence you can easily reach Montecatini by Lazzi bus or train, and from there frequent buses go to Monsummano, where a miniature "chocolate train" runs between the various locations. And while you're there, don't miss the chance to visit the 3rd Etching Biennial at the local
Contemporary Art Museum (Villa Martini, until February 15th).
