DJ DavidWhere to go (free!) for your nights out

Student Nights
[Maddalena Delli]

nightlifeNightlife can be an expensive entry in your budget, but several major clubs in Florence offer free admission to foreign students on certain nights of the week, and the trick lies entirely in knowing when to go where. Day by day, here are a few tips.

On Tuesdays the XO Discoteque (with the added attraction of being conveniently located in the city centre) admits foreign students without charge and together with Florence For Fun www.florenceforfun.org offers “Hooked on Hip Hop” with Maurizio M dj and his hip hop and R+B music selection (infoline 055.2341529)

An exciting new dance rendez-vous will brighten up Florentine Wednesdays this year: Tenax, the historic club located in Via Pratese near the airport, comes to the heart of the city centre and for one night each week it takes the Yab club (Via Sassetti) by storm with its unique mix of style and music. The night is called "This is my house” with electro-clash, spiritual house, dub, funk and world-house music. Admission is 15/12 Euros but foreign students with proof of identity enter free between 10.30pm and midnight. Dress up because there is a strict door selection. For further info call 055.308160.

On Thursday nights you can choose between Universale Dance Hall in Via Pisana (tel. 055.221122) and Central Park Vegas at the Cascine Park (tel. 055.353505). After last year’s huge success, Universale reintroduces “UniverCity” with free admission for foreign students; this year’s innovation is the live music with a different band each week. In the renovated setting of Central Park Vegas, Florence For Fun presents “M’ama... non m’ama” (that is “He loves me, he loves me not”) with free admission for students (until midnight). The djs are Maurizio M (hip hop and R%26B), and Sandro Pozzi (Italian Style).

Friday nights are XO nights again, with “School Out” and Pyno dj. The city’s art schools for foreigners will take turns and display the works of their students. As well as foreigners, Italian students can enter free until midnight. Again, free admission for international students also at Central Park Vegas.

So, what day of the week is it tonight?

[editor's note: The XO Discoteque will be closed for refurbishment starting January 2004 until further notice]
